Description:
Co-founder and editor-in-chief of El Martillo Press David A. Romero recounts his journey from full-time nationally touring poet to independent publisher. Listen to Romero explain how he and co-founder Matt Sedillo have managed to publish nearly two dozen titles in three years, including WE STILL BE: Poems & Performances by Paul S. Flores (Winner of the American Book Award, 2024) and Paper Birds: Feather by Feather / Pájaros de papel: Pluma por pluma by Sonia Gutiérrez (Honorable Mention for Poetry, International Latino Book Awards, 2024). Learn how they have managed to have their titles sold throughout Latin America and Europe, as well as have put on readings in bookstores as famous as City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco as well as in multiple Barnes & Noble locations.
Purpose:
This presentation gives insight into the process of manuscript selection, book editing and formatting, cover design, social media, website building, book printing, bookstore placement, sales, event booking, and more.

Travel and lodging can be handled in two ways: 1) the university makes the arrangements on Romero's behalf (preferred) or, 2) Romero makes the arrangements and is reimbursed with the total check.
