Discussion on love and heartbreak - 20 minutes

Performance of "Secret Beaches" and prompt - 10 minutes

Student writing time - 30 minutes
Student reading time - 20 minutes

Other prompts (optional) - 40 minutes

Total time: 120 minutes (2 hrs)

In this workshop participants write poems about heartbreak by invoking poignant items or locations as extended metaphors and/or structuring motifs.

What not to write: “You broke my heart. I should’ve known from the start. Now, all I can do is cry. Because you lied.” Why is that poem bad? How can you do better?

You will hear “Secret Beaches” by David A. Romero and learn how he used the location of the "secret beach" as an extended metaphor and structuring motif.

You will reflect on your own stories of heartbreak, choosing a relationship you want to write about.

Heartbreak Poems is a workshop that everyone can relate to! Everyone has fallen in love and had their heart broken at some point in their lives. This workshop gives students time to reflect on those past relationships.

Heartbreak Poems has been presented at:

 Cal Poly Pomona
 Orangewood Foundation in Santa Ana, California

 San Bernardino Youth Detention & Assessment Center

David A. Romero has not yet developed a flyer template for this workshop. If you decide to book Heartbreak Poems, Romero can design a flyer for the event for no extra fee.

Longer workshops, as well as multiple sessions, to culminate in a student “Slam,” (poetry competition) can be negotiated.

Professional-looking books and chapbooks to collect student work produced during workshops to be made available two months after workshops are conducted can also be negotiated.

*All workshops include a performance from David A. Romero.

**Workshop does not require multimedia. Paper and writing utensils must be provided by students or host institution(s). A supply of tissues, snacks, pillows, and other items of comfort, for the students, is encouraged.
